Most modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a factory hard coat. As that outer protection breaks down, UV exposure leaves a yellow, chalky, or cloudy layer on the surface. If the damage is external, staged sanding can remove the failed material, polishing can return optical clarity, and a UV-stable ceramic coating can protect the prepared lens. Restoration is less likely to help when haze is inside the assembly, moisture enters through a failed seal, the lens is deeply cracked, or heat has damaged the reflector or housing. Look at the lens after washing: a rough, dull outside surface points toward restoration; condensation, water droplets, or damage behind a smooth exterior points toward repair or replacement. Photos usually let us separate the two before scheduling.

Why does Arizona UV matter?
Arizona UV exposure attacks the factory hard coat, while sustained heat cycles add stress to already weakened material. Once that barrier has failed, polishing alone can make the lens clear but leaves fresh polycarbonate exposed to the same conditions that caused the damage. The protective finish is part of the restoration. 11 Mile Detail Co. applies a UV-stable ceramic coating after staged sanding and polishing. Shade or garage parking helps, but a Phoenix daily driver still needs a finish designed for outdoor exposure. Also avoid abrasive tunnel brushes and harsh cleaners around the lens. They can dull the new surface or reduce the useful life of its protection even when the restoration underneath was done correctly.
Is headlight restoration included in a detail?
Headlight Restoration is priced separately at $99 per pair, whether booked on its own or alongside Complete Detail or Pre-Trade-In Detail. It is available mobile and at the studio. The service includes staged sanding, polishing and protective treatment for suitable exterior lens damage; it does not repair cracks, leaks or internal problems. Tell us about the headlights in your inquiry and we can assess whether restoration is appropriate before you commit. If the whole vehicle also needs attention, we will show the detailing and headlight costs separately so you can choose what is worthwhile. Replacement housings, bulbs and lighting repairs are not part of that price.
Is a restoration kit as good as a professional restoration?
A kit can change how a lens looks. It cannot tell you whether the haze is on the outside, how much of the failed surface remains, or whether the new finish will stand up to Arizona sun. Sanding also removes material, so repeated or aggressive attempts at home leave less lens to work with. AB checks the lens first, removes the failed surface in stages and protects the prepared lens with ceramic rather than a wipe-on coat. If you have already tried a kit on your headlights, mention it in your inquiry so the preparation can allow for it.
How long should a professional restoration last?
There is no single lifespan we can promise for every headlight. The condition of the lens, preparation, protective treatment, parking and future wash care all matter. Restoration addresses suitable exterior deterioration, and the freshly prepared surface needs protection afterward. We will explain the treatment and care requirements for your lenses before work begins. If a lens is cracked, leaking or cloudy inside, repeated exterior polishing will not solve the underlying issue. Follow-up inspection is more useful than buying another restoration based on a calendar alone.
Will restoration improve night visibility?
Removing exterior haze can improve the amount and shape of light leaving the assembly because the damaged surface is no longer scattering as much of the beam. The actual result depends on more than the lens. Weak bulbs, failed LED modules, damaged reflectors, poor aim, wiring faults, and moisture inside the housing are not corrected by sanding the outside. If the lens becomes clear but output remains weak or uneven, the vehicle needs lighting diagnosis rather than another polishing pass. Restoration improves how the lens looks and how clearly it passes light. It does not repair electrical problems. We set that boundary before work so a customer with a bulb or housing problem does not pay for the wrong fix.
How do I maintain restored headlights in Arizona?
Wash the lenses with the same clean, paint-safe tools and pH-neutral soap used on the body. Rinse Phoenix dust before touching the surface, dry mineral-rich water rather than letting it bake, and remove bug residue promptly. Do not use household abrasives, toothpaste, aggressive compounds, or repeated polishing as routine maintenance; each abrasive pass removes material and can weaken the protective layer. Park under cover when practical, especially if the vehicle sits for long periods. Watch for a change in water behavior, renewed roughness, edge lifting, or haze. Early inspection may allow the protection to be refreshed before the lens returns to the deeply oxidized condition that requires another full sanding sequence.
