Most modern headlight lenses are polycarbonate with a factory hard coat. As that outer protection breaks down, UV exposure leaves a yellow, chalky, or cloudy layer on the surface. If the damage is external, staged sanding can remove the failed material, polishing can return optical clarity, and a UV-stable ceramic coating can protect the prepared lens. Restoration is less likely to help when haze is inside the assembly, moisture enters through a failed seal, the lens is deeply cracked, or heat has damaged the reflector or housing. Look at the lens after washing: a rough, dull outside surface points toward restoration; condensation, water droplets, or damage behind a smooth exterior points toward repair or replacement. Photos usually let us separate the two before scheduling.
A quick wipe-on kit may look better briefly but usually does not hold up like a properly prepared ceramic-protected finish.
Why does Arizona UV matter?
Arizona UV exposure attacks the factory hard coat, while sustained heat cycles add stress to already weakened material. Once that barrier has failed, polishing alone can make the lens clear but leaves fresh polycarbonate exposed to the same conditions that caused the damage. Is headlight restoration included in a detail?
Headlight Restoration is a standalone $169 service for the pair and normally takes about half a day. It is included in the Pre-Trade-In Detail when oxidation is present because cloudy lenses strongly affect front-end presentation. It is not included in the Complete Detail; that package cleans the vehicle but does not sand and refinish lens surfaces. If you are keeping the vehicle and headlights are the only concern, request the standalone service. If the entire vehicle needs interior recovery, exterior decontamination, and sale preparation, compare the Complete or Pre-Trade path. The quote should not charge separately for restoration inside the Pre-Trade package when the lenses need it, and it should not imply that clear headlights create substitute work elsewhere when they do not.
How long should a professional restoration last?
A properly sanded, polished, and UV-protected restoration should hold clarity for several years under normal wash care. That is a service expectation, not a guarantee against every parking and wash condition. A vehicle garaged in North Phoenix has an easier life than one parked outside every day. Repeated automatic washes, abrasive compounds, strong solvents, and neglected mineral spotting can shorten the finish. Consumer wipe-on or lacquer-style kits often look clear at first because they fill or cover the damaged surface, but the result commonly yellows again within roughly 18 to 24 months. The difference is preparation and protection: remove the failed layer evenly, refine the lens, apply a durable UV barrier, then maintain it without scouring that barrier away.
Will restoration improve night visibility?
Removing exterior haze can improve the amount and shape of light leaving the assembly because the damaged surface is no longer scattering as much of the beam. The actual result depends on more than the lens. Weak bulbs, failed LED modules, damaged reflectors, poor aim, wiring faults, and moisture inside the housing are not corrected by sanding the outside. If the lens becomes clear but output remains weak or uneven, the vehicle needs lighting diagnosis rather than another polishing pass. Restoration is therefore both a presentation service and a surface-clarity service, not an electrical repair. How do I maintain restored headlights in Arizona?
Wash the lenses with the same clean, paint-safe tools and pH-neutral soap used on the body.
